Who We Treat
Struggling with a drug or alcohol addiction or a psychiatric disorder on its own is a challenge. Struggling with both a substance abuse problem and a mood disorder at the same time can make it feel almost impossible to deal with your everyday life. Effective treatment for dual diagnosis will address both your substance abuse disorder and mood disorder.
Drug use often begins as a seemingly harmless or a voluntary act but in time may develop into a compulsive and overwhelming habit. Initially drug use dulls emotional and physical pain.
For this reason many people who struggle with addiction begin early use in an effort to “medicate” various forms of anxiety and depression.
Alcohol addiction, or alcoholism, is the obsessive and unmanageable use of alcohol, regardless of its negative impact on a drinker’s health, happiness, professional success and relationships. Individuals suffering from alcohol addiction will often (but not always) drink to excess, leaving themselves physically dependent upon alcohol and their lives in chaos.
Trauma can be a single event or frequently is a series of traumatic events that are repeated over time, causing an individual to become overwhelmed with painful and frightening emotions.
Trauma survivors may have experienced childhood trauma in the form of an abusive parent or loved one. This type of abusive trauma may take the form of demanding, demeaning verbal attacks or physical or sexual abuse.
